Disturbed a Monarch Caterpillar…?
My mom disturbed a monarch caterpillar while it was in the middle of getting ready to create its chrysalis. She was weeding and pulled out the milk weed plant it was sitting on. She wanted to keep it to see if it would turn into a butterfly in captivity, so she created an artificial environment for it, but it's looking rather unresponsive and lethargic right now. Did she mess up its metamorphic cycle, or will it try to create its chrysalis again?
It should do fine. my sister an I made an artificial environment like that once, a plastic bucket that had a lid (it held popcorn and cotton candy once–that thin cloudy plastic). We poked holes in the top, put grasses in the bottom and lots of milkweed. they poop out little green pellets and it's so cool! Ours hung from the lid of the bucket rather than the branches we put in there. they will emerge in 10-14 days so keep an eye on it! It'll be green at first, but towards the end you'll be able to see through the chrysalis and see it's beautiful wings! Maybe you could take a picture of it every day and watch its progress?
Adam is right. Just give it some time and it will probably turn into a chrysalis. Make sure you put a milk week branch in thre so it can eat if it wants or has a place to hang from.
