Halloween parties abound in valley
All the desert was a stage Sunday, as Coachella Valley residents adorned with masks, capes and wigs celebrated Halloween.
More than 5,000 people spent the day at Howl-O-Ween Harvest Happening at The Living Desert in Palm Desert. then as the sun went down, the party heated up on Arenas Road, blocked off between Indian Canyon Drive and Calle Encilia for a Halloween celebration in downtown Palm Springs.
Kids could ride a camel, bowl with pumpkins, aiming at milk-jug “pins,” or build their own scarecrow at the Living Desert’s Halloween bash. some joined the Living Desert’s costumed characters on the dance floor and moved to music from The Dunebillies, a local children’s band.
Dressing as an owl proved a wise choice for Laura-Elena Mayorga, 8, when she took first place in the desert animal category of the costume contest. Her mom used eyelash glue to form a mask of owl feathers around her eyes.
“We’re really happy that she finally gets to be acknowledged,” Laura-Elena’s mother, Ana, said. “At school they had two contests, and that two days, she didn’t win.”
Bruce Craven’s family left before the costume parade, but seeing all the costumes at the event was like a parade to his 4-year-old son, who dressed as Spider-Man.
“he was just being like, ‘Oh, Daddy look! There’s Wolverine,’ and ‘There’s another Spider-Man,’” Craven said. “The costumes were really addictive for him.”
