IAIN’S A DEMON SINKER ; Russell haunts the Sons

IAIN RUSSELL came back to haunt his old club as Livingston took another big step towards the title.

the striker – who spent four seasons with the Sons as a youngster – made it six goals in as many games when he added to Keaghan Jacobs’ early opener in a blistering start.

And Russell insists he should have been celebrating another but sub Liam Fox nicked the ball off him to rattle home no.3 after the break.

So Russell had to settle for one and now sits on 15 for the season in the league.

that leaves him just two behind Ayr’s Mark Roberts at the top of the scoring charts but Russell doesn’t care about personal glory.

he said: “Being amongst the top scorers isn’t something I think about too often.

“I’m concentrating on winning the league. we are quite an attacking team because we know we have a solid defence and a good goalie in Tony Bullock. that gives us the security to play.

“I was happy to score and Foxy nicked one off me at the end. the boys were saying I had already missed too many chances so I should have given the ball to him anyway.

“We’re delighted with the win because Dumbarton have been on a great run of form.

“I was with the Sons for almost four years and really enjoyed my time at the club.

“It’s nice to see guys from my time here who are still at the club – like Stephen Grindlay.”

Dumbarton would have been less pleased to see Russell as he played a key role in Livi’s storming start.

Gary Bollan’s men flew out of the traps and took the lead after just four minutes.

Bobby Barr’s deflected shot fell to Jacobs at the back post and he smashed his effort in off keeper Grindlay.

Dumbarton made an immediate response and almost levelled when Jon McShane’s volley smacked off the bar.

But Livi doubled their advantage after seven minutes when Russell showed his predatory instincts.

the striker’s backward header from a corner hit the bar and Russell pounced on the rebound first to lash the ball past old pal Grindlay from close range.

Pat Walker then had an effort cleared off the line for Dumbarton before midfielder Andy Geggan was denied by a good save from Bullock in the Livi goal.

Sub Fox nearly made it 3-0 with his first touch but his curling free-kick crashed off a post. however, the midfield man didn’t have to wait too long for a goal as he netted with 20 minutes to go.

Russell managed to shake off the Dumbarton defence and was shaping to shoot when his team-mate arrived, took the ball off him and drilled a shot past Grindlay from just inside the box.

Sons boss Alan Adamson said: “Livi deserved their win as they just looked sharper than us.”
