Kingstonian 3 Brighton & Hove Albion XI 2

Ks at last found their shooting boots with their first victory of the pre-season campaign against a youthful Brighton side at Kingsmeadow on Friday night.

Bobby Traynor bagged a second goal and Ks’ third, one just after the break that proved the winner, although the Seagulls did have chances to level the score again.

Ks now play their landlords AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow on Tuesday (July 27, 7.45pm) in the annual Trevor Jones Memorial Trophy.

It was Ks striker Carl Wilson-Denis, deep in the Brighton box on 10 minutes, who set up Traynor but he sliced his drive.

Wilson-Denis got the loose ball first but he sidefooted his drive straight at keeper Clark Masters.

Three minutes later, the visitors responded when midfielder Ryan Thomson’s sweet chip into the Ks box was only cleared to defender James Smith, who blasted over from the edge of the box.

Ks defender Tom Bird’s corner from the right found Tobi Jinadu on the far post but his header went across the face of the away goal.

Then a Bird free-kick saw central defender Max Hustwick head over.

On 18 minutes, Ks scored their first pre-season goal when a cross from Lee Hall fell to Wilson-Denis in the Seagulls box.

His effort was blocked but BOBBY TRAYNOR, in typical poacher fashion, belted the loose ball home.

Back came the young Seagulls, with winger Leon Redwood curling a free-kick from the right flank into the arms of Ks keeper Rob Tolfrey neatly positioned on his line.

Traynor then turned provider, setting up Wilson-Denis on the edge of the Brighton box but his powerful rising drive was deflected just over.

On 31 minutes the Seagulls drew level when CONOR WILKINS, on the edge of the Ks box, skilfully curled a free-kick in off the near post, giving Tolfrey no chance.

seven minutes later Ks were back in front when Adam Thompson took off, finding Traynor in the Seagulls box.

the Ks striker returned the ball to ADAM THOMPSON, whose powerfully struck drive took a deflection and flew past a full-stretch Masters.

with three minutes to the break, the Sussex youngsters were back in business when a cross from skipper Andrew Whing found striker Conor Hider on the Ks penalty spot.

He let loose a thundering drive that Tolfrey did well to block with his legs but striker GEORGE BARKER was on hand to lash the ball home from a yard out.

in the final minute a Bird corner from the right was met with a glancing header from Traynor which flew past the far post.

the second half saw the game slow somewhat with the introduction of the inevitable army of substitutes.

On 50 minutes a long free-kick from Bird found his skipper Jon Boardman, just inside the Seagulls box, but his looping header went over.

Then a drive from Wilson-Denis, on the edge of the away box, was aimed straight at Masters.

On 56 minutes Thompson pushed a ball through to BOBBY TRAYNOR on the edge of the Seagulls box, he sidestepped a couple of defenders, kept his head and calmly slid the ball past the outcoming and full-stretch Masters.

Just after the hour Bird took off on a long run ending up in the Brighton box.

Traynor returned the ball to the Ks defender but he blasted over.

Thomson set winger Aaron Hopkinson free down the right in space but he fired over.

Then Tolfrey flew out of his box to clear from a lurking Redwood.

the Seagulls really should have equalized when sub Jake Caskey’s throughball set Thomson completely free down the right, Tolfrey came out to narrow the angle, but the Brighton midfielder slid the ball the wrong side of the far post, holding head in frustration.

Sub Dean Lodge found Traynor on the edge of the away box, he turned, but his drive skied over.

Then, with a minute to go, a Lodge cross from the right picked out sub Dave Ellard close in but Whing made a superb blocking tackle.
