Makeup artists teach you how to create wedding-day beauty every day
Maybe your wedding day is nearing. maybe you’ve just hit amilestone birthday, and need a pick-me-up. and maybe you caught your reflectionthis morning and thought, “Holy smokes. who is that tired-looking woman?” Ifyou recognize yourself in any of the aforementioned scenarios, you may need theservices of a good makeup artist.
No, I don’t mean the lovely ladies behind the counter atNordstrom, or the helpful gals at Sephora. Skillful though they may be, they’resalespeople. It’s no skin off their nose if you leave $200 poorer when all youcame in for was a measly $20 lipstick.
“At a lot of those counters, the people who work (there)aren’t doing makeup every day on lots of different people. They’re primarilythere to sell,” says Lindsey Watkins,a local makeup artist. “This is my career. This is what I do every single day.Today, for instance, I did hair and makeup on 10 models, and most of them gotmore than one look. and that’s a normal day for me.”
Watkins, who earned a degree in graphic design from theRhode Island School of Design before becoming a makeup and hair-styling pro, charges $150 for a makeup lesson. before you balk at the fee, consider that itincludes enough time to do two full looks, a face chart and, if the client hasa camera, a step-by-step chronicle of the process so she can recreate it athome.
Stacya Silverman, a Seattle-based aesthetician and a nationallylauded eyebrow guru, also advises that women “pick (a makeup artist) who’sgoing to allow you to make follow-up calls with questions, or drop by.” For$125, Silverman offers a step-by-step makeup lesson, a thorough going-over ofyour makeup collection and some product education, too. She’s the creator ofthe BeautyAlert cosmetic labels, and as part of the fee, she’ll label your productswith expiration dates as well as sterilize your brushes and tools.
If you’re a stressed-out bride, though, it’s probably unwiseto wield your own eyelash curler. better to sit back and be pampered by someonewho’s focused solely on giving you a beautiful, camera-ready and long-lastinglook for your special day.
Crystal Seung, a Seattle-based makeup artist, suggestsscheduling a dry run at least a month before your event. That gives her time toprovide a full skincare consultation and get a feel for what the bridewants. “It also gives me the opportunityto custom-blend the foundation color,” she says. Seung charges $50 for thepractice session, and $100 for the bride on the day of the event. (Seung’swebsite is in progress; to see samples of her work, contact her via e-mail.)
Wedding-day makeup isn’t just about looking pretty in person — it’s about looking good in your photographs, says local makeup and hair pro Tiffany Lowry. “That’s themost important thing: how you look in pictures, because that’s something you’regoing to have for the rest of your life.”
Lowry – miss Make up on 92.5 FM – also recommends a practicesession before the wedding. For $50, she does the whole thing – foundation, blush, eye makeup, false eyelashes. “I suggest that brides bring a digitalcamera to see how (the look) reads in photographs, and to wear something nice,so you don’t look like pretty girl in a tank top,” she says. Lowry charges $100 if the bride comes to heron the event day (at Red X Hair Studio onCapitol Hill), and $135 for on-site bridal makeup.
Thought she’s seen just about everything in 14 years ofmakeup artistry, Lowry understands the significance of the day – and the roleshe can play in averting bridal meltdowns.
“I feel like makeup artists and hairstylists set the tone forthe day. They’re the person who’s making you pretty. They’re making your skinlook beautiful, they’re chitchatting, they’re making you feel like a princess.”
