Lawndale man gets 27 years to life for machete killing

Lawndale man gets 27 years to life for machete killing| POLICE NEWS | BLOG: SOUTH BAY CRIME, COURT NEWS

A Lawndale gardener was sentenced Friday to 27 years to life in prison for hacking a roommate to death and maiming another man with a machete in their home last year.

Carlos Humberto Arias Donis, 26, sat quietly in Torrance Superior Court, listening to a Spanish interpreter as Judge mark Arnold imposed the sentence.

Donis will be eligible for parole in 27 years, but his release is unlikely because of the serious nature of his crimes, attorneys said.

Unlike other sentencing hearings where victims’ family members offer passionate testimony about a crime’s impact on their lives, Friday’s sentencing was without emotion.

No one from victim Francisco Garcia’s family appeared to speak on his behalf. Victim Damian Ramos, who testified during the trial that he survived 10 lashes from the machete and has suffered permanent scars and damage to his body, also did not attend.

And, as was the case during his trial in July, none of Donis’ family members or friends attended the hearing or spoke for him.

Jurors convicted Donis of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and aggravated mayhem on July 27, agreeing that he was responsible for the bloody scene, but did not plan it.

Donis hacked the 23-year-old Garcia with a 3-foot-long machete 16 times on Aug. 25, 2010, at a home on Larch Avenue. Three blows struck Garcia in the front of the neck, nearly beheading him. each lash was considered severe enough to be fatal.

Prosecutors contended the victims were asleep when Donis attacked them, but jurors did not agree. they believed Donis’ testimony that Garcia, Ramos and another man attacked him with a knife, provoking him to respond. He said he pulled the machete out from under a sofa that he used as a bed but could not recall what happened after that.

Two jurors said the panel believed some of Donis’ contention that he acted in self-defense, but noted he attacked his victims too many times with the machete to warrant anything less than second-degree murder.

Deputy Public Defender Lloyd Handler said he planned to appeal the verdict and sentence. He argued that the judge pressured jurors into a decision when, three days into deliberations, the panel announced it was deadlocked. some jurors were leaning toward convicting Donis of murder charges and others of a lesser manslaughter count. one juror initially believed Donis was not guilty of anything.

At the judge’s request, Handler and Deputy District Attorney Don Syn argued their case again before the jury when panel members suggested it would be helpful.

A day later, jurors settled on a compromise of second-degree murder.

Decent heated eyelash curler?

 Decent heated eyelash curler?

My eyelashes are medium/long but grow down and can't hold a curl. I used a heated curler a long time ago and it worked fairly well compared to everything else I tried. I want to buy one, but I don't want to spend a lot of money until I really decide to start regularly wearing makeup. I'm almost 21 and I have never been a girl to wear makeup because of my eyelashes. so is there something cheap out there I can buy while I attempt to start wearing makeup?

If you but Tweezerman manual eyelash curlers & then gently heat them up with a hairdryer, you lashes hold the curl really well. You need to do this before you apply your mascara. once they are curled, coat each lash. I like to curl one eye and just put mascara on the top lashes, then curl up the other side and coat the top lashes too, then return to the first bottom set, followed by the last bottom set. This just enables them to dry thoroughly so you don't get mascara all over your top lids. I like to use an old clean wand (the best being a silicone wand by L'Oreal) & use it to sseparateany slight clumps. When you heat the curlers, don't burn your lids! Change the rubbers when they get hard or old.
Another thing you can use is a heated eyelash curler by eyecurl. www.eyecurl.co.uk
These are the best heated lash wands you can buy. They get nice & hot. I like to use a manual curler to lift my lashes a little (this makes it easier to apply my mascar because they're dead straight) & then once my mascara is dry I use my lash wand. They're about £15 ($30 ??)

blow a hairdryer on a regular one for a while til its hot

How to get curled eyelashes without an eyelash curler….?!?

How to get curled eyelashes without an eyelash curler....?!?

are there any tricks to getting my lashes to curl without a perm, extentions, or an eyelash curler?

ok, i have a mascara that is great because its totally clump-free, adds volume, and adds length. but it doesnt really add curl, but i really want my straight lashes to curl! but because the mascara is good for everything else, PLEASE DON'T SUGGEST a DIFFERENT MASCARA.
also, please DON'T suggest getting eyelash extensions or perming my lashes because i dont want to go to that extent just to get curled lashes.
also, please DON'T suggest getting an eyelash curler!!

is there anything i can rub on my lashes to make them curl? (like lotion or vaseline or something?)
are there any tricks to getting my lashes to curl without a perm, extentions, or an eyelash curler?

try using a mascara with a curved brush, that does the trick!

Vaseline or lotion will make it clumpy wether or no your mascara is good or not! even though I read don't suggest new mascara, I do. MaryKay mascara is my absolute favorite; when I put it on I curl it upwards with a rotating motion – it looks prettier and like I used a curler! you could always just stay with your kind and do the motion too! good luck and happy lashes =]

my friend uses a spoon but that is just a little more trickier than an eyelash curler. sorry but i have super straight eye lashes too (some even curve DowN!) & the only way to get them curly is an eyelash curler. i ♥ them. they work great
i think any type of lotion will only weigh them down and that is the total opposite of curly

You can always get another mascara (one with a rounded brush), swap brushes with your current mascara, and you'll get instant curled lashes!! Or, you can always opt to fake lashes.

a cold spoon…but idk, I have naturally curly eyelashes..

What are tips for a heated eyelash curler?

1310133615 70 What are tips for a heated eyelash curler?

What have you found that makes them work better?

hold the curler on your lashes for about 30-4 seconds
and it works like a charm (or at least my heated curler).
it works like if you have a curling iron with your hair.
but it is not that hot.
like when you iron…if you fold something and iron over it then the iron will make a nice crease.
just like the curler will make a nice curls with heat.

Go to www.seventeen.com its like a girls bible haha.

you have to be really careful, but if you can do it. take your hair blow dryer and put it on the curler for a minute, then apply to lashes. be careful it gets hot and can burn

1309226418 52 My shih tzu has 2 eyelashes growing from inside his bottom eye lid and in the other he has 1 growing from the?

other can i pull them out.hes 8 months old

No, he has an ophthalmic condition called distichiasis, which requires medical treatment. The vet can numb the area and pluck the lashes, but they'll grow back. They can be removed permanently with a laser.

You should act quickly because this can cause a corneal ulcer to develop quite rapidly from the friction.

Pulling lashes hurts like heck, please don't do that. take him to the vets soon because that can cause damage to the eye.
