white eyelashes

As one of America’s most popular pets, these guys do pop up everywhere in our culture. And they are fun to draw, try this method at home on a rainy day when you get the chance.
1. The Playful Pup- A few basic rules will help you achieve success on these guys. The ears are a rounded triangle shape; the face is very round, with large eyes and a medium sized nose. The muzzle should be shorter, but not so short it looks like a toy breed. Bodies are round and fleshy, with ample amounts of baby fat, and tails are short and chubby looking. Legs should be short and thick, and the abdomen should display the smallest amount of tuck to it. No hip bones should be visible and paws should be round with four toes on each paw, three toes looks like a deformity. The coat should be fluffy and appear to be soft. Tufts of hair on the head eyelashes can help distinguish sex and a neck adornment will also help with that.
2. The Loving Mother- Female dogs can be trickier than other animals, most often man’s best friend is another male, but female Labradors can be made and are special in that you don’t see tons of them in cartoons. A more slender muzzle and head, as well as a slightly longer neck and body will help the effect, modest eyelashes and soft eyes will also give you the desired effect. More slender boning in the legs, a long smooth tail, and a gentle curve in all the body lines will help you make the female look more feminine. Give her no definition of hair ant the top of the head, this is not a long haired breed and puppy fuzz should stay on puppies. Moderate size to the paws, she is a dog that loves water and should be depicted as such. Always a dog collar, no dog collar means homeless in the dog world, and every girl loves her jewelry. She should be slightly shorter and smaller than her male counterpart, but will look both graceful and reliable to any human companion who would keep her.
3. The Daddy Dog- He should have distinctly square lines, a boxier head than momma, with a larger nose and not as round as a pudgy puppy. Smaller, well set eyes, no lashes, and maybe a set of lines at the top of the head in a hair spot, but they should be short. Rounded triangle ears, and a thick neck and body, with heavier boning in the legs. A little bit of hair definition at the tail and well rounded paws will make him look capable in the water. I like my cartoons to have a touch of realism, and while my male dogs are all “neutered”, I do give them some penile definition at the abdomen, and it should be very modest if you choose to follow suit. His body should be a square and should stay fairly within those lines, which should all be crisp and muscular looking, though not to the extreme as say a Bulldog’s would be.
4. Old Dogs, New Tricks- Grand-Dog should be leaner, with a little sag to the skin, but don’t exaggerate the effect. Sway the back a little, bony definition on the body, and the muscular look of the more youthful animals should be gone. Longer legs and tail give the dog a ganglier look, as though it was once mighty and handsome but has lost some grandeur to age, and the ears should be set lower on the head. Larger paws will also make the animal look as though it once had more substance but again has lost some to age. Black and brown labs should display white at the muzzle and eyes, and whiskers can be used on males.
